I had to install an Acer 4300U scanner on Linux, and I was pretty disappointed that the scanner would not work out-of-the-box. This was because this particular scanner, along with other supported by the SnapScan backend of SANE (the software that provide scanning support for Linux and other Free/Open-Source operating system), require a copy of the scanner firmware. This firmware file is not distributed with SANE, unfortunately. You would usually have to grab it from a Windows installation or from the scanner driver CD. Unfortunately, I had neither a Windows installation nor the driver CD at hand. I had to hunt for the driver on the Internet and extract the firmware file by hand. This was tedious.
To save other user of Linux and SANE the trouble, I make the firmware files from the Windows driver I found available here. Be sure to read the instructions on the SnapScan backend site, then choose the appropriate firmware from the table below.
